ABBA

Finally gotten my membership at the local library and “ABBA unplugged” by Karl French is the first book I borrowed on qingming holiday.

ABBA – the Swedish band whose songs I adore and yet I know so little about them. A quick browse through the 200 pages gave me a good glimpse of their lives, joys, success, failures, disappointment etc.

A is for Agnetha, B is for Bjorn, B is also for Benny, A is also for Anni-Frid

Each is musically gifted, each struggles before succeeding as ABBA – breaking through in Eurovision Song Contest in 1970s. I see joys, triumphant, contradictions, struggles after success, marriage, divorce, remarriage, group disbanded in 1980s.

I also learn a few interesting/enlightening facts:

Abba – a Swedish canned fish company is happy to share its moniker so long as “the musical Abba did nothing to bring shame on the canned herring concern.”

Lebensborn programme – a Nazi organization set up by a Nazi leader Heinrich Himmler, in response to the dramatic loss of young lives across Germany and occupied territories (e.g. Norway). The programme looks to boost the population of Aryan (the elite race) children by encouraging Nazi soldier to have children with women in occupied territories. Shelter/protection is provided to these women and children. Understandably and unfortunately, these women and children are ostracized by their communities at home (Nazi’s occupied territories).
